Advanced power substation for oil & gas facility

The requirement

Commercis, recognized as a leading provider of engineering and turnkey solutions, reached a significant milestone by successfully delivering a cutting-edge power substation. The project involved Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of a 10MW electrical substation to support systems transformation, upgrade, integration, MCC automation, safety & security enhancement, including and not limited to capability expansion. The scope included the engineering, design, procurement of materials, construction, installation, testing, site integration and commissioning.

Project challenges

The project presented a range of significant challenges that required strategic planning and precise execution to overcome. One of the primary challenges was the tight schedule imposed by the client’s operational requirements. The project timeline was exceptionally stringent, demanding rapid execution across all phases, from initial design to final commissioning. This meant that the team needed to maximize efficiency at each step, ensuring that engineering, procurement, and construction activities aligned seamlessly to meet critical deadlines.

Another substantial challenge was the complex coordination necessary to manage a wide array of stakeholders. Successful delivery required close collaboration among utility companies, local authorities, and multiple subcontractors, each with their own processes and schedules. Managing these relationships and ensuring alignment across all parties was essential to avoid delays and to achieve the project’s goals. Regular communication, strategic planning, and coordination meetings were instrumental in maintaining project momentum and facilitating timely problem resolution.

The project’s technical complexity further intensified the demands on the team. Integrating a new substation into the client’s existing power network without causing disruptions required meticulous engineering and a deep understanding of the existing infrastructure. This integration involved carefully planned phases, where each component was tested and aligned to ensure seamless operation. Technical challenges of this nature demanded a high level of expertise to maintain system stability and avoid interruptions to the client’s operations.

Finally, regulatory compliance posed an additional layer of complexity. Given the project’s location, adherence to stringent local and international standards was mandatory. Ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational regulations required detailed planning and rigorous quality control throughout the project’s lifecycle. The team worked closely with regulatory bodies to ensure that every aspect of the project, from materials used to installation procedures, met or exceeded the prescribed standards.

Addressing these challenges required a well-coordinated, agile approach, drawing on technical expertise and collaborative problem-solving to successfully deliver

long-term solution that would maintain operational stability and future-proof their power infrastructure.

The approach

The successful execution of this project was grounded in meticulous planning and a structured approach across each stage of development. Beginning with detailed planning, the team crafted a comprehensive project execution plan (PEP) that outlined all phases, ensuring clarity and direction from start to finish. A thorough risk assessment was also conducted, allowing for the identification of potential challenges and the development of robust mitigation strategies. To maintain alignment and foster collaboration, a communication plan was established to facilitate regular updates and ensure seamless coordination among all stakeholders.

In the engineering and design phase, advanced engineering software and tools were employed to create a detailed design for the substation, tailored to meet the client’s specific needs. Multiple design reviews were conducted in collaboration with stakeholders, ensuring that every requirement was addressed. The design focused on modularity, allowing for ease of installation and accommodating potential future expansion to support long-term client goals.

Procurement was approached strategically to secure high-quality materials and equipment critical to project success. By negotiating favourable terms with suppliers, the team ensured timely delivery and minimized the risk of delays. Strong relationships were cultivated with vendors, allowing for prompt resolution of any supply chain issues, which was essential in maintaining the project’s tight timeline.

During construction and installation, an experienced construction team with a proven track record in substation projects was mobilized. The team prioritized adherence to stringent safety protocols and maintained rigorous quality control on-site, safeguarding both workers and equipment. Additionally, close coordination with utility companies was critical to managing the integration of the new substation with the existing power network, ensuring a smooth and secure connection.

In the final phase of testing and commissioning, the team implemented a series of comprehensive procedures to verify the substation’s performance and reliability. Extensive testing under various load conditions was conducted to confirm operational readiness, ensuring that the substation could meet the client’s demands from day one. To support ongoing success, training was provided to the client’s operations team, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage the substation long-term.

The solution

In response to the client’s requirements and pressing challenges, Commercis was entrusted with delivering a 10 MW compact power substation through a full turnkey program.

The successful delivery of this project yielded impressive results that met and exceeded client expectations. One of the most notable achievements was the timely completion of the project, despite the tight timeline and complex coordination required. The team’s dedication to effective time management ensured that each phase progressed smoothly, allowing the project to meet all operational deadlines critical to the client’s schedule.

The project adhered strictly to the allocated budget, thanks to disciplined cost management and strategic resource allocation. The project team carefully balanced quality with cost efficiency, which enabled them to stay within budgetary limits without sacrificing the quality or reliability of the final deliverables.

Throughout the project, maintaining quality and safety standards was a top priority, and the substation ultimately met all prescribed regulatory and quality benchmarks. Strict adherence to safety protocols throughout construction and installation resulted in zero safety incidents, underscoring the team’s commitment to a safe and controlled work environment.

The substation also delivered exceptional operational efficiency. Integrated seamlessly into the client’s existing power network, the substation provided reliable and efficient power distribution, supporting the client’s ongoing operational needs with minimal disruption. This integration marked a key milestone in modernizing the client’s infrastructure, offering improved performance and sustainability.

Crucially, the client’s satisfaction with both the project execution and the substation’s performance underscored the success of the entire effort. The client’s positive feedback highlighted the effective collaboration, technical expertise, and problem-solving approach that defined the project. The successful delivery not only fulfilled the client’s immediate needs but also positioned the team as a reliable partner capable of handling complex, time-sensitive projects with professionalism and precision.
